In September 1979, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers performed at a Musicians United for Safe Energy concert at Madison Square Garden in New York. [24] Their rendition of " Cry to Me " was featured on the resulting No Nukes album. [25]

Petty showed the guitar he wrote 20 years of songs on to Anthony Mason on "CBS This Morning" in 2009. Watch the interview below:

It was wonderful. I didn't have the money to have a vast record collection, so I learned everything, really, from the radio... In the mid-'60s, AM radio, pop radio, was just this incredible thing that played all kinds of music... You could hear Frank Sinatra, right into the Yardbirds. The Beatles, into Dean Martin. It was this amazing thing, and I miss it in a way because music has become so compartmentalized now, but in those days, it was all right in one spot...

But before the decade was up, Petty found himself bankrupt after the record label MCA attempted to buy out his contract from ABC Records, which distributed Petty's original label. It took nine months of litigation for Petty to secure a new deal so he could release the biggest record of his career, 1979's Damn the Torpedoes , which reached Number Two on the album chart and has since been certified triple-platinum. The album contained the singles "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Refugee," establishing him as a full-fledged hitmaker.
